Helichrysum patulum are tough plants, able to survive prolonged drought and are wind and frost resistant. It was used by the Khoikhoi people as bedding due to its anti-microbial properties. The word Helichrysum is derived from the the Greek word helios meaning "sun" and chrysos meaning "gold", although not all species have golden flowers.
